MembershipThe Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Greater Tampa Bay (SCWTCGTB) is dedicated to promoting the welfare, health, and preservation of the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier breed. Regardless of our club name, we cover the entire State of Florida. So even if you live in Pensacola or Key West, you are welcome to become a member.

Breed Education
The club provides educational resources and information about the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier breed to potential owners, current owners, and the general public. This includes breed characteristics, temperament, grooming requirements, and health considerations.
Breeder Referral
We offer breeder referral services to help individuals find responsible breeders who adhere to the breed standard and prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs.
Events and Activities:
The club organizes various events and activities throughout the year. In January, the Annual Dinner and Silent Auction benefits Wheaten Health & Rescue. Members bid on great Wheaten items to add to their collection. In June, The Wonderful World of Wheatens Education Day is held in St. Petersburg for a day of fun and learning with your Wheaten.
Health Initiatives
The club supports and participates in health initiatives aimed at improving the overall health and well-being of Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers. This could involve advocating for health testing, research into breed-specific health issues, and promoting responsible breeding practices.
Community Outreach
The club engages in community outreach activities to raise awareness about responsible dog ownership, breed-specific legislation, and other relevant issues. This can include participating in local pet expos, conducting breed presentations, and collaborating with other animal welfare organizations.
In October, we celebrate our Annual Picnic & Holiday Craft Fair in Sarasota. This is a big reunion attended by members from around the Southeast. Many of the photos above are from our past year picnics. We have games, contests, raffles, and great camaraderie with other Wheaten owners and dozens of Wheatens. These events provide opportunities for Wheaten Terrier owners to showcase their dogs, participate in competitions, and socialize with other enthusiasts.

Wheaten Information
The SCWTCA Health Committee is conducting three health projects with the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School, under the development and guidance of Paula Henthorn, Ph.D.
- PLE/PLN – University of Pennsylvania Research Projects (2020).
- Hemangiosarcoma – North Carolina State University (2018).
- Degenerative Myelopathy – University of Missouri (2020).
The key to effective dog training is consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement. Consistency involves establishing clear rules and expectations for your dog and consistently enforcing them. Patience is essential because every dog learns at their own pace, and it’s important to remain calm and persistent throughout the training process. Positive reinforcement, such as treats, praise, or play, helps motivate and reward desired behaviors, making learning enjoyable for your dog.
